Kitchen Renovation & Design: The Planning Stage

The kitchen is truly the heart of the home - a space where we gather, connect and create memories. We do a lot more than prepare and cook meals! Often we find ourselves working on our laptop, our kids are setting up to do their homework, friends and family are gathering around to chat.

Gone are the days when kitchens were hidden away at the back of the house. Modern homes are designed with open plan living and the kitchen now usually opens to the dining and lounge areas. So this new floor plan has implications for the kitchen design and the aim is to create an aesthetic and functional cohesion with the rest of the space. For kitchens that aren't open plan - it can maintain a link to the other areas via colour and materials.

Kitchen Renovation

If your kitchen feels outdated or simply doesn’t meet your needs, it might be time to consider a renovation. Transforming your kitchen can enhance its functionality and also the way you experience your home every day.

Does your kitchen suit your lifestyle or the way you like to cook and entertain?

In this post, I’ll cover the first stage of a kitchen renovation, the planning stage.

The Planning Stage

Planning for a new kitchen is exciting—it’s a chance to create a space that aligns with you and your lifestyle.

In the planning stage we want to make sure that all the decisions that need to be made throughout the project are considered and included in the overall plan. Every detail and aspect of the project matters, from layout and cabinetry to materials and finishes. It’s about bringing together all these elements seamlessly to achieve a cohesive and functional final result.

Defining the vision and scope

Do you know exactly how you would like your kitchen to look? If you're lucky you may have your dream kitchen clear in your mind and you're ready to start designing!

Many of us, however, only have a vague idea of the look and style and perhaps a wish list of features we’d like to include.

Having a clear vision for your new kitchen provides the starting point that allows us to hone in on the style, materiality and functionality, as well as prepare a budget, set the timeline and establish whether there are any construction constraints.

Creating a mood board

Start by collecting images of products, materials, colours and other elements that appeal to you and represent the style you like.

Then arrange these images onto a board and you will start to see a scheme and colour palette emerge that may form the basis of your new kitchen.

In the mood board below, I assembled images of materials, fixtures, fittings, furniture and art that could be used in a white kitchen.

Setting the budget for kitchen renovation costs

Creating a budget for your kitchen renovation is crucial to ensure funds are properly allocated. Focus on major components such as labour costs, materials and appliances. These are the biggest costs of the renovation and will also have the biggest impact on the final result.

EXTRA MEL MAR DESIGN TIP:

I recommend setting aside an amount for any contingencies. If you're lucky, you won't have any unexpected costs during the kitchen renovation but they can arise and it's best to be prepared.

Establishing the timeline

During the planning stage, setting up a timeline is essential to ensure the project remains organised and runs smoothly. Communicating the time frame informs trade professionals of the dates they will need to be on site. A timeline also allows for planning for the delivery of materials, appliances and other essential components.

Space planning and constraints

Take a close look at your current kitchen. What works and what doesn’t?

The planning stage is the ideal time to address issues such as layout, positioning of openings or removal of walls.

If you’re considering structural changes such as relocating plumbing or installing skylights, then consulting with professionals and trades early on allows for these changes to be built into the plan and timeline.
