It goes without saying that careful planning is a pre requisite to achieving a functional, aesthetic and timeless kitchen. Whether you are building new or renovating your current kitchen, it pays to carefully plan and consider the essentials to achieve the right design.
In this article I share my top five essentials for the initial stages of kitchen planning.
1. Space planning and layout
Space planning considers circulation within and around the kitchen as well as the layout of the cabinets and appliances.
Circulation
There are general guidelines for spacing between benches and appliances to allow for comfortable movement and use of the space. Generally the space between benches is 1100mm however this is dependant on the size of the kitchen as well as personal preference. The minimum is 900mm to allow for the opening of drawers and the dishwasher. This can range up to 1200mm to allow for more than one user to comfortably work in the space and up to 1550mm for a wheelchair user.
Kitchen layouts
The size and configuration of the room as well as personal preference will determine the layout of the kitchen. Some layout options include L shaped with an island, galley, U shaped with an island or peninsula and straight line.
Kitchen zones
Current kitchen design focuses on zones as opposed to the long standing principle of the kitchen triangle. With kitchens forming the central part of the home in open plan living, the triangle has been replaced by consideration of preparation, cooking, cleaning and storage zones. This makes the kitchen more accessible to multi users and purposes.
2. Cabinetry, storage and organisation
Cabinets are one of the most defining features of the kitchen, not only from a visual aspect but also from a storage and organisational aspect. Getting this right will ensure you have a functional, ergonomic and stylish kitchen.
Will you have standard or custom size cabinets? Where will the pantry be placed? Which finish and colour will you select? Cupboards or drawers? These are some of the considerations that need to be determined as part of the planning process.
3. Benchtop and splashback
Along with cabinetry, the benchtop and splashback are a major part of the functionality and visual impact of the kitchen.
With so many options to choose from, selecting the right colour and material can be a time-consuming process. A good starting point is to consider the architectural style of the home, the interior and exterior colour palette as well as the desired aesthetic. From here it's a matter of selecting the materials, colours and finishes.
4. Fixtures and fittings
Research is key when selecting your fixtures and fittings such as appliances, sink, lighting, tap ware and cabinetry hardware.
Functionality should be a primary concern ensuring that your selections meet your practical needs.
It is essential that when researching your appliances including the oven, cooktop, range hood and fridge, to look at the brand, sizing, features, warranties and price - compare between models and read any reviews to ensue you are happy with your selection.
When selecting taps consider water usage, durability, efficiency and future maintenance.
5. Lighting
Proper lighting is essential for both functionality and aesthetics. Include a mix of task, ambient, and accent lighting to create a well-lit, inviting kitchen.
Ambient lighting for general kitchen tasks such as wiping cabinets or sweeping the floor. Task lighting over the island or benches for food preparation or at the sink for washing. Accent lighting at specific points where you may wish to highlight sentimental pieces or design features.
